Dehavilland Beaver
The Dehavilland Beaver was manufactured at the Downsview Airport outside Toronto, Canada between 1947 and 1967. It is considered to be one of the Ten Outstanding Canadian Engineering Achievements of the past century. It was honored in 1985 for its role in opening up our nations vast northern region, with a commemorative stamp.
Being the first foreign aircraft ever ordered in peacetime by the United States Air Force and Army was testament to its reliability and safety. The US Armed Forces became the owners of over half of the Beavers built. Eventually they were sold to 65 different countries, making this tough, hard working plane one of Canada's greatest export successes. It was the original STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) aircraft; today many newly constructed aircraft can trace their design back to the Beaver.
One of the things that make it so dependable is its engine, the Pratt and Whitney Wasp Junior, a nine-cylinder radial engine with 450 HP. This incredible engine, designed in the mid thirties will most likely become the first ever aero-engine to still be used in scheduled service 100 years after it was first built. It is estimated that 1000 of the 1631 Beavers built are still flying, even more remarkable considering they were used in the most forbidding places in the world and are veterans of two wars.
